4. Cirrhosis of the liver
Cirrhosis of the liver usually causes abdominal fluid retention. It also causes low protein albumin synthesis by the liver and results in legs and abdominal fluid retention.

5. Congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy disease and heart valve disease
Congestive heart failure obstructs the normal circulation of the blood and often leads to water retention. Two most common causes of water retention in congestive heart failure patient are: (1) the blood flow to the heart backups and leaks into the lung and vein; (2) the kidney retain fluid due to the insufficient amount of blood flow. Both cardiomyopathy and heart valve disease are a variety of heart disease and lead to heart failure.

6. Excess sodium intake
In people who are more sensitive to sodium, excess sodium intake will raise the blood pressure and lead to water retention especially in the lower extremities such as swelling in the ankles and feet.

7. Gravity
Standing or sitting too long in one position because of occupation necessity or after long trips may cause fluid retention in legs. This is usually worsened in high temperatures.

8. Pregnancy
In some cases, the developing uterus in pregnant women may press the vena cava leading to fluid retention in the legs. Hormone imbalances and increased amount of blood flow also responsible for water retention during pregnancy. If the disease is detected at an early stage it stands better chance of getting cured than the state of diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, where the cancer has already spread to various parts.

It's true that peritoneal mesothelioma is fatal and leads to several deaths every year. However, with continued researches, several modes of treatments have been embarked upon and in the future there is a fair chance of the disease becoming absolutely curable. The types of treatment of peritoneal mesothelioma include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Radiation therapy, the second method, requires the application of high energy X-rays to shrink the tumor and kill the malignant cells. The drugs may be administered by mouth in the capsule form or may be applied intravenously via needle.

The reason that this group of workers is at high risk, is because in the 20th century, asbestos was used extensively as a construction material. It is still present in many old buildings that were built during this time frame. Most, if not all of these tradesmen are either not trained to recognize it, or have received very little training.

An entire new industry sprung up after the scientists confirmed that asbestos does indeed cause mesothelioma cancer. Today, in most states, companies that are specialist at removing it from buildings, must have special training, and need a specific license to do it.

It is extremely expensive and time consuming to completely remove it from a building that has a large amount of it inside. The workers must all wear special uniforms that are very cumbersome and quite hot. In many cases, a worker can only work for 15 minutes, before they need to take a break.

The building also must be totally sealed off from the outside while the removal process is going on. This is done so that none of the asbestos can escape into the air, and be circulated by the wind. After the workers are done for the day, they are washed off before they remove their uniforms, and the water is kept to be purified later.

Because it is so timely and expensive to remove from a building, only a tiny fraction of the structures that have asbestos in them, have been totally renovated. In addition, while the demolition process is going on, all of the occupants of the building must relocate. Of course, this only adds to the landlords cost, and is one more reason why so few buildings have it removed from them.

People with mesothelioma complain on breath shortness, persistent cough, sputum, and chest pain. The pain comes from pleura - the lungs lining that is very sensitive to irritation. Mesothelioma tends to cause fluid accumulation in the pleural cavity.

Peritoneal mesothelioma causes weight loss, pain and ascites (belly swelling due to fluid in the abdominal cavity). Peritoneal mesothelioma also may block bowels and cause all kinds of troubles with gut obstruction. As many cancers, asbestos cancer also changes blood clotting, causes blood cells decrease (anemia), night sweats, and fevers. Ascites may lead to nausea and feet swelling. Spreading of the cancer will bring pain, difficult swallowing, and neck swelling. This symptom happens because of compression of some great veins going to the heart in your chest. In general mesothelioma symptoms are not very specific. They may characterize any other type of cancer as well as many other non-cancerous diseases. This problem delays diagnosis. Sometimes patients think that they have viral pneumonia. Some patients don't have any symptoms at all. Mesothelioma in advanced stage, as well as majority of cancers, will cause fatigue.

Doctors would think first about congestive heart failure. Mesothelioma would rather cause an exudate. Exudates are a cloudy pleural effusion with many cells and proteins. Exudates happen after the pleura is irritated and inflamed, as it happen in mesothelioma. To check the type of effusion, doctors would stick a needle and get the fluid sample. This stick is called diagnostic thoracentesis. The fluid will be checked in the lab. If mesothelioma is the cause, cancer cells may be found in the fluid

Why shortness of breath develops? The dyspnea (breath shortness) happens exactly because too much fluid is accumulated and press on the lung, pushing it away form the chest wall inside and thus making the lung smaller. Also the pain from inflamed pleura prevents patient from deep breathing. The receptors in inflamed pleura also cause dry cough. Listening to the lungs with a stethoscope reveals decreased breath sounds. Tapping on the chest sounds dull. This all is the consequence of fluid accumulation.

During your doctor's visit, you should discuss your concerns about asbestos exposure in the past. Your doctor should check the area of pain and swelling; he also should listen to your breath sounds and check for fluid collection. If your doctors suspect the effusion he may send you for tests and X-rays or refer to a specialist.

If a doctor suspects mesothelioma, he dose not have many specific tests on hands. Many of the usual tests may show no results in mesothelioma. Simple chest x-ray does not always show small pleural effusion. A lateral decubitus film may be required for smaller effusions (the same x-ray but the side view). Otherwise CT scan or ultrasound may show the effusion.

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that arises in the mesothelial cells of different organs, usually the lungs and less commonly in the heart and the abdominal cavity. The symptoms that may occur depend essentially on the site of development of the mesothelioma cancer. Since the cancerous cells grow from the lining of the organs into the organs' tissues, the function of that organ is affected first. In later stages of the disease, the symptoms are more generalized as the disease spreads to several parts of the body (metastasis).

Pleural mesothelioma

With Mesothelioma

The pleura refer to the cell lining of the lungs. In simple terms, the pleura is a sac that protects the lungs from external shocks and from friction with other organs. It also secretes a vital fluid that lubricates the lung movements preventing damage to the lung surface. Pleural mesothelioma refers to the development of cancerous cells in the pleura. When pleural mesothelioma begins, a series of small white nodules appear on the surface of the pleura. These coalesce to form a crust that compresses the lungs. It also spreads outwardly into the chest wall and ribs.

Several Symptoms of Mesothelioma

However, the early symptoms of the disease are not serious enough to cause alarm which delays diagnosis, resulting in aggravated circumstances. Inflammation of the lungs both by the presence of the cancer cells and their causative agents (e.g. asbestos fibers) result in the increased production of fluids by the pleura. This is known as pleural effusion. Excess fluid in the lungs result in symptoms such as:

* Coughing
* Wheezing
* Shortness of breath
* Hoarseness

There may also be chest pain due to the increased pressure on the diaphragm and the lungs as a result of pleural effusion and the constriction of the tissues by the cancerous cells.
Peritoneal mesothelioma

The presence of cancerous cells in the peritoneum (the lining surrounding the abdomen and the stomach) may have diverse consequences depending on the location of the tumors. The most common symptoms are:

* Unexplained weight loss
* Fever
* Increased abdominal girth
* Distention of the abdomen
* Presence of fluid in the abdomen
* Fever
* Weight loss
* Loss of appetite
* Anemia
* Fatigue
* Bowel obstruction

In the later stages of the disease, the blood platelet count rises significantly resulting in greater blood clotting.

Pericardial mesothelioma

With the development of cancer in the pericardium (the cell lining around the heart), the symptoms are very similar to other heart conditions, making pericardial mesothelioma difficult to diagnose. Most symptoms arise because of an accumulation of fluid in the pericardium resulting in:

* Palpitations
* Chest pain
* Murmurs
* Cough
* Difficulty in breathing

As it can be seen, in all three cases of mesothelioma, the symptoms are very non-specific. In other words, the disease does not have a specific symptom of its own. Most of its symptoms can be confounded with the symptoms of other diseases (including some relatively common ailments such as influenza in the case of pleural mesothelioma). Hence, mesothelioma diagnosis is quite difficult.

Introduction

Mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the tissue which surrounds and protects various organs in the body. This tissue is called the Mesothelium, and Mesothelioma causes it to become abnormal, divide without control, and invade and damage nearby organs. The most common form is pleural mesothelioma which affects the sac that lines the chest cavity and protects the lungs (the pleura). Other forms are peritoneum mesothelioma (which affects the abdominal cavity) and pericardium mesothelioma (affecting the lining around the heart). The tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) although they are most often malignant.

A Brief Overview of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of asbestos, a fibrous carcinogenic. These fibres lodge themselves in the lining of the lung affecting the mesothelial cells. Sometimes they cause scarring of the lungs (which is called asbestosis) but this is not cancerous. They can, however, trigger tumour growth between 20 to 50 years after they are inhaled (the average is 35 to 40 years). Asbestos fibres which are swallowed can reach the lining of the abdominal cavity where they play a part in causing peritoneal mesothelioma.

It is generally the case that the longer or more intense the exposure to asbestos the more likely Mesothelioma is to occur. However, there are cases of people getting Mesothelioma years after having worked with it for just a few months. The families of asbestos workers are also at risk as they would possibly have been exposed to asbestos fibres on the clothing of their loved ones.

The dangers of asbestos are now well known, but this was not always the case. Before the 1970s asbestos was a primary insulating material with little or no control in its use or handling. The resulting increase in cases of Mesothelioma is a direct cause of these past practices.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma is often advanced before symptoms occur. This means that the prognosis is not usually very good, with the average survival time for all stages of Malignant Mesothelioma being about one year. Symptoms resemble pneumonia, which coughs, breathing difficulties and abdominal pain being common.

Treatments

Mesothelioma can be treated by chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery, or a combination of the three.

Surgery

Extra pleural pneumonectomy is where the entire lung and a portion of the lining of the chest, the diaphragm, and some or the entire sac which surrounds the heart is removed.

Wide local excision targets and removes the cancer and a limited amount of the healthy tissue surrounding the cancerous region.

Pleurectomy and decortication removes part of the covering of the lungs, as well as the lining of the chest and portions of the outside covering of the lungs.

Pleurodesis uses a blend of chemicals and/or drugs to create an intentional scar between the layers of the pleura. Post surgery, the space created by the scar must be drained, using either a catheter or chest tube, and is then filled with a chemical which inhibits the accumulation of fluid in the pleura cavity.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation Therapy uses high energy x-rays to kill cancer cells.

In External radiation therapy a machine emits radiation in a targeted stream at a certain portion of the body

Internal radiation therapy uses needles, seeds and catheters to place radioactive substance directly on or near the cancer.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses cancer targeting drugs to stop the cells them from dividing and thus prevent their growth.
