Asbestos is a Silent Killer part 1 of 3 June 30, 2002, legislation was passed in British Columbia by the Campbell Liberals such that no one over age 65 would receive a disability award for a work related disease or injury. The effects of asbestos are not noticeable until 15 to 40 years after contact. Thirty-five (35) people in BC Living their remaining years in extreme pain and suffering as a result of exposure to asbestos. Doug Jones, president of Local 480 United Steel Workers in Trail, BC Asbestos exposures are relevant through out the region, in factories, schools, hospitals, ferries, ship yards, and all through the building trades. Workers cut sheets of asbestos to make insulating blocks. Lots of asbestos dust particles being breathed. This type of labor work was done 2-3 times per month, and many people did this for twenty years. Asbestos dust cuts the lining of the lungs which induces scar tissue, and the scar tissue reduces lung capacity, damages the air-sacs in the lungs, so this is a very painful death. These people with Asbestosis or Mesothelioma can't do much of anything since they can't breath and they have to rest all the time to catch their breath. Their pain, their chemical therapy for pain, their breathlessness, their quality of life is ruined. The climber suffered from an extremely rare and aggressive asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. In 1984, Hall was a part of the first Australian team to climb Mt. Everest, although he was unable to summit the peak due to altitude sickness. But in 2006, he tried again. World News Australia reports ... "It was his second attempt in 2006, which made international headlines — this time he made it. On the way down, Lincoln Hall was again hit by altitude sickness, and his team left him there." According to Sydney Morning Herald... "He was left for dead on the mountain at 8700 metres when he broke down while descending from the 8848-metre summit. Those with him could not move him after he became delirious, a sign of oedema, or fluid on the brain." The world-renowned climber had a career that spanned 30 years, and included expeditions across the Himalayas, Andes and Antarctica. According to Australia's Channel 7 News ...
