Mesothelioma: What is asbestos?

mesotheliomatreatmentandoptions.blogspot.com Mesothelioma (or, more precisely, malignant mesothelioma) is a rare form of cancer that develops from transformed cells originating in the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.[1] The most common anatomy site for the development of mesothelioma is the pleura (the outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it can also arise in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), and the pericardium (the sac that surrounds the heart),[2] or the tunica vaginalis (a sac that surrounds the testis). Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they inhaled asbestos, or were exposed to asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. It has also been suggested that washing clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos increases their risk for developing mesothelioma.[3] Unlike lung cancer, there seems to be no association between mesothelioma and tobacco smoking, but smoking greatly increases the risk of other asbestos-induced cancers.[4] Some people who were exposed to asbestos have collected damages for asbestos-related disease, including mesothelioma. Compensation via asbestos funds or class action lawsuits is an important issue in law practices regarding mesothelioma (see asbestos and the law). Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and ...

There are asbestos mines in many parts of the world including South Africa and Quebec. Each year thousands of workers, as well as their families, are diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, asbestos-related cancers, and mesothelioma. Here is what you need to know: What types of products contain asbestos? Prior to 1974, there were thousands of commercial products that contained asbestos. These products were commonly used in power plants, commercial boilers, navy ships, government buildings, hospitals, schools, churches, embassies, factories, and office buildings throughout the country, including in the DC metropolitan area. The products containing asbestos were used to insulate hot water pipes, boilers, generators, heating systems, drywall material, electrical boxes and cables and structural beams. Who has been exposed to asbestos products over the years? Prior to 1974, workers in practically every trade were routinely exposed to asbestos products. How Are People Exposed to Asbestos?

How Are People Exposed to Asbestos? www.mesorc.com People who work with asbestos-containing materials on a regular basis account for the highest levels of asbestos exposure. Certain jobs and work environments, like mining, factory work, ship building, and construction work, are more likely to result in asbestos exposure than others. Studies have even shown that the family members of asbestos workers have suffered asbestos exposure from fibers brought home on the workers' clothing. In fact, second hand asbestos exposure is increasingly being recognized as a direct cause of mesothelioma, lung cancer and other types of serious asbestos-related illnesses. Asbestos exposure can also occur in the home from building materials wearing down and releasing fibers into the air. It can occur among people who live near an asbestos mine. Drinking water may even contain asbestos fibers. This happens when: -Fibers erode from natural deposits or piles of waste asbestos and enter the water -Fibers enter water from asbestos-containing cement pipes used to carry drinking water -Water is filtered through asbestos-containing filters. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires water suppliers to test water samples regularly. Suppliers must notify the public via newspapers, radio, TV, and other means if levels are higher than allowed. The biggest risk factor for developing the deadly cancer mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. The risk is directly related to how much exposure a person had ...
