Surviving Mesothelioma

Paul Kraus is a mesothelioma survivor and the author of Surviving mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, usually with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant neoplasms (cancer) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the internal organs of the body. The commonest site is the pleura) (outer lining of the lungs and chest, but it is also in the peritoneum (the lining occurthe abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they asbestos particles are inhaled or asbestos dust and fiber in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos or by home renovation exposed to asbestos-cement products.

Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until between 30 and 50 years after exposure toAsbestos.

A marked shortness of breath and chest pain due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of this pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (an accumulation of fluid) in the abdominal cavity. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma can intestinal obstruction, blood clotting disorders, anemia, and fever.

Ifhas the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, the symptoms pain, difficulty swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. Note however, that these symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other less serious conditions. The issue of a mesothelioma diagnosis is often difficult because the symptoms are a number of other, less serious conditions are similar.

In June 1997 Mr. Kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma ("Terminal" cancer) and as live only a few months. Later, more than eight years, he has to live with a good quality of life with surgery, refused radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. He took an alternative approach to cure his cancer, the body, mind and spirit involved.

In his book on mesothelioma, Kraus is how he beat the odds too. The introduction reflects inspiration Paul and commitment to life:
