The climber suffered from an extremely rare and aggressive asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. In 1984, Hall was a part of the first Australian team to climb Mt. Everest, although he was unable to summit the peak due to altitude sickness. But in 2006, he tried again. World News Australia reports ... "It was his second attempt in 2006, which made international headlines — this time he made it. On the way down, Lincoln Hall was again hit by altitude sickness, and his team left him there." According to Sydney Morning Herald... "He was left for dead on the mountain at 8700 metres when he broke down while descending from the 8848-metre summit. Those with him could not move him after he became delirious, a sign of oedema, or fluid on the brain." The world-renowned climber had a career that spanned 30 years, and included expeditions across the Himalayas, Andes and Antarctica. According to Australia's Channel 7 News ... Warren Zevon - Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner - His Last David Letterman Show - Part 4/4 (HD)

On October 30, 2002, after Zevon's terminal mesothelioma diagnosis, he was featured on The Late Show with David Letterman as the only guest for the entire hour. The band played "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" as his introduction. Zevon performed several songs and spoke at length about his illness. Zevon was a frequent guest and occasional substitute bandleader on Letterman's television shows since Late Night first aired in 1982. He noted, "I may have made a tactical error in not going to a physician for 20 years". It was during this broadcast that Zevon first offered his oft-quoted insight on facing death: "Enjoy every sandwich". He also took time to thank Letterman for his years of support, calling him "the best friend my music's ever had". For his final song of the evening, and his final public performance, Zevon performed "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" at Letterman's request. In the green room after the show, Zevon presented Letterman with the guitar that he always used on the show, with a single request: "Here, I want you to have this, take good care of it". Steve McQueen's Viceroy Ads

When I first started posting videos in YouTube one of my earliest postings was of Steve McQueen pitching Viceroy Cigarettes. I had an open and closing bumper that mentioned Steve's death as a result of flung cancer....and a "please don't smoke" ending. People came out of the woodwork cheerfully suggest that McQueen's death had "nothing to do with cigarettes." It is true...Steve's cancer was mesothelioma...the variety usually attributed to asbestos exposure. In late October 1980, McQueen flew to Ciudad Juárez to have the metastatic five-pound abdominal tumors removed, despite the warnings of his US doctors that the tumor was inoperable and that his heart would not withstand the surgery. McQueen died of cardiac arrest one day after the operation. Shortly before his death, McQueen had given a medical interview in which he blamed his condition on asbestos exposure. While McQueen felt that asbestos used in movie soundstage insulation and race-drivers' protective suits and helmets could have been involved, he believed his illness was a direct result of massive exposure while removing asbestos lagging from pipes aboard a troop ship during his time in the Marines. Regardless of that, McQueen was a heavy cigarette smoker and a daily marijuana smoker. Whether the tobacco and weed caused the cancer or not, you can BET that neither helped.
