Mesothelioma treatments usually focus on destroying the malignant cells and preserve the healthy cells. Basically, there are several types of mesothelioma treatment available for patients. The three major options for treatment of their disease include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
#1 - Surgery

Surgery is performed on mesothelioma patients to cure the disease in order to keep the patient more comfortable and improve the quality of life. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is almost always diagnosed in the last stage, thus curative surgery is not an ideal option.
As tests are developed that may help to diagnose mesothelioma at an earlier stage, surgery could become an option in the future. Surgery is usually combined with radiation of chemotherapy to remove the mesothelioma tumour and surrounding tissues that contain the cancer cells.
#2 - Radiation Therapy
Radiation is one of the mesothelioma treatments and is often recommended to patients if their health is too fragile for surgery or chemotherapy. It can reduce the size of tumour and relieve symptoms such as pain and shortness of breath. However, your doctor may limit its use depending on the volume of the tumour and the distance to other vital organs.
Radiation causes the least side effects and is usually easier to tolerate than chemotherapy. There are also a few types of radiation therapy available to mesothelioma patients and the type of treatment they receives depends on several factors such as the stage of the disease and whether other treatment options are viable.
#3 - Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a general term to describe the use of medicine, drugs and chemicals as a method to kill cancer cells. Doctors usually combine two drugs for the best results. It can be used by itself as a primary type of treatment to help keep the cancer from spreading or to relieve symptoms.
Chemotherapy causes side effects such as fatigue, nausea, and vomiting and hair loss. Other drugs are given to the patient to fight with the unpleasant sides effects such as medication to relieve nausea and vomiting or vitamins to replace the essential ones that had been lost during chemotherapy. However, some patients opt not to receive this mesothelioma treatment because of the severe side effects.
The type of mesothelioma treatment are recommended to the patients will largely depend on several issues such as type of mesothelioma (location of tumour), size of the tumour, stage of the cancer (beginning, advanced, etc), age of the patient and the overall physical health of the patient
