Australian Mountaineer Lincoln Hall Dies at 56

Transcript by www.newsy.com BY MICHAEL COLLINS ANCHOR ANA COMPAIN-ROMERO Lincoln Hall, one of Australia's most eminent mountaineers, passed away on Tuesday. The climber suffered from an extremely rare and aggressive asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. In 1984, Hall was a part of the first Australian team to climb Mt. Everest, although he was unable to summit the peak due to altitude sickness. But in 2006, he tried again. World News Australia reports ... "It was his second attempt in 2006, which made international headlines — this time he made it. On the way down, Lincoln Hall was again hit by altitude sickness, and his team left him there." According to Sydney Morning Herald... "He was left for dead on the mountain at 8700 metres when he broke down while descending from the 8848-metre summit. Those with him could not move him after he became delirious, a sign of oedema, or fluid on the brain." The world-renowned climber had a career that spanned 30 years, and included expeditions across the Himalayas, Andes and Antarctica. According to Australia's Channel 7 News ... "Mr Hall died peacefully at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on Tuesday after a year-long battle with mesothelioma ... the climber and author was diagnosed with the rare cancer last year, the result of being exposed to asbestos while building cubby houses as a child." Hall is survived by his wife Barbara Scanlan and two sons.
