Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Survival Rate

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that begins in the lining of the lungs. The main reason is believed that unprotected contact with asbestos. Each year about 3000 new cases of this disease are reported in the U.S.. It is estimated that during the last fifty years, nearly eight million people were exposed to asbestos and that 300,000 new cases would be reported until 2030. The summit is about the year 2020 and thereafter the incidence is likely to taperdiminishes because of the preventive measures being taken.

As in all cases of cancer, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to improve survival. Both counts on the pleural mesothelioma patients are at a disadvantage. Symptoms take anywhere between 20 to 50 years to manifest. For this reason, patients are generally in the fifty plus age group. And the outward signs of disease observed are similar, the lesser of several complaints. This makes theDiagnosis difficult. Because of all this is recognized, by the time the problem is likely to have the cancer spread. As yet there is no fully effective with the treatment. It is generally accepted that a combination therapy is better than monotherapy. Much of the research is being done in this area.

A number of studies were not performed on the survival rate for mesothelioma patients. They all come to the same result - the disease is almost always fatal. TheLife of a person diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma is about six months to two years. There were exceptions, and their stories are inspiring. Life expectancy depends on the stage (Pleural Mesothelioma has four different phases) and the type. A research on the basis of histologic (tissue structure) test shows a median survival of 11 months - 9.4 months for sarcomatous, 12.5 months for epithelial and 11 months for mixed.

A number of inspirational booksare available for the patient to read and to strengthen itself. Also helpful are chat rooms with others in the same situation.
