Mesothelioma treatments: What are my options?

Clinical research for the treatment of malignant mesothelioma is very active, and although no treatment is not yet proven to be successful, there are a variety of treatments available to people diagnosed with the disease. There are three types of standard applications used for malignant mesothelioma, which include: surgical treatment, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy.

Surgery

Surgery for malignant mesothelioma is divided into a number of sub-classes, whichto limit specific to the disease for people with special strains of the disease.

Extrapleural pneumonectomy is a severe form of surgery, in which the whole lung and part of the lining of the chest, diaphragm, and some or all of the sac that surrounds the heart removed.

Wide local excision is a form of surgery, the goals and removes the cancer and a limited amount of healthy tissue around the cancer region.

Pleurectomy anddecortication eliminates the coverage of the lung and the lining of the chest and arms of the outer covering of the lung.

The surgery pleurodesis is a significant technology, where it employs a mix of chemicals and / or drugs to an intentional scar between the layers of the pleura create. Be discharged after the operation has created the space by the scar, either with a catheter or drainage and then with a chemical that inhibits the accumulation of filledFluid in the pleural cavity.

Radiation

The second primary medical technology to the development of malignant mesothelioma fight radiation. Radiation therapy for malignant mesothelioma as the application uses the same basic technology as other forms of medical radiation, where the high energy technique employs x-rays to kill cancer cells. The process is divided into two broad categories:

External radiation therapy is a technique in which a machine sendsCurrent radiation selectively to a particular part of the body, thus killing the cancer cells within their jurisdiction.

Internal radiation therapy, by contrast, uses an external machine does not, but needles, seeds and catheters to place radioactive substance directly on or near the cancer. While the exact nature of the implementation is of course dependent on the type and stage of disease, which is constant in this category that the goal is to get made, the radiationdirectly onto the cancerous area and thus a more focused and directed dosing.

Chemotherapy

The third standard treatment of malignant mesothelioma is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy drugs that target cancer cells and stop them from dividing and thus prevent their growth.
In systemic chemotherapy, the drug can be taken by mouth or injected, but either way the goal is it to reach cancer cells by their own blood in the systemic circulation. In regional chemotherapy, the drug is brought directly into the target area. And finally, is what combination chemotherapy using two or more anticancer drugs, which can be administered either orally or by injection.

Malignant mesothelioma is a serious illness, to bear for anyone, but to educate itself to the available options is an important step for making the process manageable.
